Flow Measurement of a Cold Transfer Fluid
Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) is an intermediate product for the production of polyurethane plastics. During the purification of the MDI oligomer mixture, heat must be dissipated from the process. An organic coolant, which is cooled down to -40 °C, is used as a heat transfer medium. For process control, the flow rate of the organic coolant in the charging pipeline to the heat exchanger must be measured.
Based on their positive experience with the FLUXUS ultrasonic flow meters, the plant operator decided to also fit this measuring point with FLEXIM's non-invasive, clamp-on ultrasonic technology. For 10 years, similar measuring equipment has been used at the same plant: the FLUXUS clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter, mounted on a WaveInjector transducer fixture, non-invasively measure the flow rate of an MDI intermediate product which is heated to above 200 °C. In addition, the FLUXUS and WaveInjector transducer mounting fixture are also used for the flow measurement of thermal oil which is heated up to 240 °C.
Advantages
- Reliable and accurate non-invasive flow measurement at cryogenic temperatures
- Simple retrofitting during ongoing operation, plant availability is not affected during installation or possible maintenance
- Highly cost effective solution, especially for large nominal widths
